Although the site was acquired in 1884, Townsville's Roman Catholic Cathedral was not built until the turn of the century. Designed by the Victorian architectural firm of Reed, Smart and Tappin, it was built for 16,000 pounds ($32,000) by M.J. Keleher and completed in 1902. When Rev. William Mason Walsh, parish priest at St. Josephs for 30 years, died in 1908, Bishop Duhig obtained consent to inter the remains of Father Walsh within the Cathedral. - Information copied from the back of the photograph.
