Former Thuringowa Shire
DESCRIPTION
Name Former Thuringowa ShireDescriptionUnder the Divisional Boards Act of 1879 the Thuringowa Division was formed. It covered an area that extended 170 kms along the coast from the mouth of the Burdekin River to Crystal Creek and inland to the coastal ranges. Eventually, the Thuringowa City area covered roughly the western third of the division’s original area. Townsville City Council was amalgamated with and absorbed into the Townsville City area in 2008. Thuringowa was an interesting mix of urban, pastoral, and industrial interests. “Thuringowa Central” suburb still bears the name of the former Thuringowa Shire.
