Tattersalls Hotel
DESCRIPTION
Name Tattersalls HotelDescriptionTattersalls Hotel was erected in 1899, the fourth building on the site.
The first hotel on the corner of Flinders and Wickham Streets was erected in late 1865, a little over twelve months after a settlement was founded on the banks of Ross Creek. Known as the Townsville, it was a modest timber structure which was destroyed by a cyclone in March 1867. A more substantial building was erected as a replacement and in 1868, the name changed to Tattersalls. A succession of additions and alterations were undertaken. In 1881 the hotel was substantially rebuilt as a two storey timber structure.
A long serving licensee of Tattersalls was Tom Enright. Enright took up the license in 1886 and was active in civic affairs. He served several terms on the Townsville Municipal Council and was Mayor in 1899. Enright developed Tattersalls into one of the most prominent hotels in the town and in 1899 decided to build a new hotel. He engaged local architects WG Smith and Sons to prepare plans for the building. The new Tattersalls was of brick and incorporated a dining room to seat 80 guests and public bar on the ground and bedrooms on the first level. The North Queensland Herald described the building, as ‘an architectural acquisition to Flinders Street.’
The building continues to operate as hotel. Substantial alterations have been made to the interior at ground floor level, but the building retains its original form and external fabric, including unusual caste iron balustrading on the verandah.Geolocation[1] Address87,Flinders Street,Townsville,4810,Australia
