Most known for his time as Townsville city Mayor, Mr Smith’s other achievements include founding the Angus Smith Marine in 1965 and his Military service during WWII as acting squadron leader, Royal Australian Air Force.
Returning from war he served as an alderman on the Townsville City Council for eighteen years, fifteen of them as mayor (1952–1967). Overseeing the development of parks and gardens and the completion of the Tobruk Memorial Baths, he was also involved in City Council decisions to gift land to education and research institutions, including what is now JCU’s Douglas campus.
