Native of Devonshire, England, John is the son to Rev. John Gill who was the Vicar of Ashburton for 60 years.
John came to Queensland in 1885 and held the position of Local shipping manager of Burns Philp and Co, resigning to take over the position of Shire clerk of the Thuringowa Shire, he occupied this for 23 years.
Because of an amendment to the Local Authorities’ Act prohibiting an employee of one Local Authority from being an alderman of another, he resigned at Thuringowa Shire Clerk in 1933 and contested the Townsville Mayoralty winning by a substantial majority.
