Name VP50 : Victory in the Pacific 50th Anniversary
Description1995 marked the 50th anniversary of the end of the Second World War. In recognition of this, the VP50 celebrations commemorated the victory in the Pacific, August 1945. Celebrations held on August 11-20, 1995, included a range of celebrations, historic significance, and highlighted ‘A time to remember’ in the city of Townsville.
‘Townsville would stand taller in the eyes of the nation and the world after VP50’, said Townsville Enterprise chief executive officer Richard Power. “The publicity generated from this event like this will be national and international” he said. About 30,000 people are expected to visit Townsville during the 10-day festival’. –Townsville Bulletin Feature, Wednesday August 9,1995 Page 3.
The event expected more than 5,000 participants in the VP50 street Parade which resembled the City’s famous 1946 Victory Parade.
The festival brought the City of Townsville to life with a range of activities including ‘A tribute to our Pacific Allies’, acknowledging the vital role played by our pacific neighbours, several ceremonies throughout the festival, breakfasts, official openings, reunions, tours and much more.
