Cyclone Leonta
DESCRIPTION
Name Cyclone LeontaDescriptionCyclone Leonta hit Townsville on March 9, 1903. Significant damage was caused due to the strong winds, leaving homes and properties greatly destroyed. Severe damage was felt across the city, amongst those destroyed were the Grammar school and one of the main wards of the General Hospital, trapping several inside.
The cyclone resulted in 12 deaths in total, 9 fatalities from hospital, 2 found within destroyed homes and 1 on Stanton hill two days later.
The cyclone travelled inland for a period passing close to Charters Towers where another 2 deaths were recorded and then passed near Bowen.
Most damage came from the severe wind gusts with flying roofing iron, buildings blown over and verandas wrenched away.
