DESCRIPTION
Name Cyclone YasiDescriptionCyclone Yasi started developing as a tropical low northwest of Fiji on the January 29, 2011. It began to intensify towards Vanuatu and maintained a category 4 as it accelerated towards Queensland.
The cyclone was predicted to be a category 5 system and was extremely large, over 1000kms. Over 400, 000 people were directly impacted by Cyclone Yasi.
Bringing gusts estimated at 285 Kilometres per hour, the cyclone hit Townsville on February 3, 2011, fortunately leaving the far north’s major cities, Cairns and Townsville, relatively unscathed. While Towns such as Cardwell, Tully, Mission Beach, Innisfail and many surrounding townships were badly damaged.DateBetween 26th January 2011 and 6th February 2011
