Name Opening of Childrens LibraryDescriptionDecember 5, 1953, Mayor Angus Smith opened the Children’s Library on Flinders Street. This was the first of its kind in North Queensland and gave the children of the city an opportunity to borrow their own books.
The Townsville City Council had realised the necessity for a children's library, but for some time had refrained until suitable accommodation could be found.
When a Large photographic studio in the town hall building became available in 1951, the QLD State Librarian advised that with alterations, this space would comfortably accommodate a library.
The library was opened on the first floor with more than 3000 children as members. Date5th December 1953
