The Philip Leong OAM Collection

DESCRIPTION

NameThe Philip Leong OAM CollectionDescriptionCollection of images donated by the Leong family. Philip Leong OAM was a shop owner and businessman, who moved to Townsville from China in the 1930’s to join his parents. His parents owned a shop in Hermit Park at the site of the Hermit Park Shopping Centre today. Many Chinese families owned and operated corner stores in Townsville at this time.
His parents retired in 1944 and he ran the family business for many years. Wanting to expand the family business, he opened the Hermit Park Shopping Centre, the first self-service supermarket in 1959. He opened supermarkets and shopping centres in many suburbs in Townsville including Aitkenvale, Vincent, Garbutt and Belgium Gardens.
The Philip Leong stores were sold to Woolworths in 1981. In 1999 Mr Leong was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia and in 2000 he was named the Townsville Citizen of the 20th Century. The collection includes photos from 1940's to 1990s of store openings, to wedding photos and photos of Hermit Park in the 1946 Townsville Flood.
