Peter Bell Collection
DESCRIPTION
NamePeter Bell CollectionDescriptionA collection of photographs taken in a number of North Queensland towns including Townsville, Ravenswood, Cairns and Charters Towers, in preparation for the publication of Timber and Iron: Houses in North Queensland mining settlements, 1861-1920.
Timber and Iron examines all houses of the region in the period 1861-1920. It is concerned prinicpally with the ordinary timber and iron dwellings, but also with such humbler housing as tents, and bark and slab huts. Timber and Iron is the first serious attempt to study the history of domestic architecture in one region of Australia. The author visited most of the towns in North Queensland, photographing nearly four thousand houses and processing their characteristics by computer.
Houses photographed in Townsville include the suburbs of Railway Estate, North Ward, West End, South Townsville, Hermit Park, Mysterton, Hyde Park, Belgian Gardens and Townsville City. ContentEach photograph is numbered. This number corresponds with numbered location on the map index for that location. Map indexes are held for Cairns, Townsville and Charters Towers photographs only. DateBetween 1st January 1970 and 31st December 1980
