NameGleeson FamilyDescriptionFamily of Daniel (Dan) Gleeson, first Mayor of Thuringowa.
Dan Gleeson's grandfather, Thomas Gleeson was born at Dulla Rathsburg County Tipperary, Ireland on 6 May 1841. He was a blacksmith by trade and came to Australia in 1864 on the Castle Eden. He made his way to Nebo where he met and married Margaret Bulger in 1869. They came to Townsville in the early 1870s and took up land on the bank of the Ross River between what is now Gleeson’s Weir and the Black Weir. Thomas established a blacksmith shop on the opposite side of the road and a hotel (the Retreat Hotel) on the river side of the road.
On 4 April 1882 their son Malachi Edmund was born. He worked as a fitter in the Railway Department but left to take up grazing. Malachi Edmund is the father of Dan Gleeson.
Gleeson Street, Hermit Park is named for Thomas Gleeson.
