DESCRIPTION
Name Queen's HotelDescriptionThe Queen’s Hotel was built in 1872 for James Evans. It was the third hotel built on The Strand, located on the corner of The Strand and Wickham Street. It was the first hotel in Townsville to be supplied with reticulated water and connected to the town’s gas supply.
In 1899 John Henry Tyack from Charters Towers purchased the freehold and licence of the Queen’s Hotel. He engaged architects to design a new building and ran the hotel until his death in 1913. Replacement of the timber hotel with a brick building adjoining the first building started in 1902 and progressed in stages until completion in 1920.
Following Tyack's death, the hotel was placed in the hands of Queensland Trustees Ltd, who transferred the property to Queen's Hotel Townsville Ltd in 1924-25. During World War II, the Queen’s Hotel was occupied by US forces as a US Officer’s billet. The Queen’s Hotel was bought by Ansett in 1952 who made some additions and improvements however it ceased operating as a hotel in 1966 when it was purchased by Far North Theatres. It was then purchased by Samuel Allens in 1973 and Telecasters North Queensland Ltd in 1976.
